Delta Residents Displaced as Flood Submerges Communities
Residents of Isoko South Local Government Area in Delta State have been left homeless as severe flooding overwhelms several communities, submerging schools, farms, and businesses.
The affected areas, including Araya, Uzere, Igbide, Okpolo-Enhwe, and Enhwe, have seen properties worth millions of naira destroyed, worsening the hardships faced by local residents.
Ovoke Warri, the Chairman of Isoko South council, conducted an on-site assessment of the damage over the weekend and expressed his deep concern over the scale of destruction caused by the flood.
At Adam’s Memorial Secondary School in Araya, which is currently serving as a temporary shelter for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Warri conveyed his sympathy to those affected and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing their needs.
He urged residents to heed government warnings to relocate from flood-prone areas to safer, higher ground.
Warri assured the residents of support from the state government while thanking community leaders and volunteers for their efforts in assisting affected individuals.
Some displaced residents praised the council chairman for his prompt visit and called on state and federal authorities, as well as international organisations, to provide additional assistance, emphasising that local efforts alone may not be enough.
