Delta Launches Six-Month Countdown to New Electricity Policy
Delta State has begun its most ambitious power-sector reform yet, giving two consulting firms six months to produce a policy blueprint that aligns with Nigeria’s deregulation drive. The decision follows a strategy session involving Armese Consulting and Energy Market and Rates Consultants.
Officials say the new framework will introduce modern regulatory models, attract investment, improve supply reliability and support industrial expansion. The consultants are expected to produce comprehensive technical and policy recommendations that match the needs of a competitive electricity market.
The state has been pursuing energy autonomy since July 2025, when it established an independent electricity market under the Electricity Act 2023. That move grants states the authority to regulate power generation, transmission and distribution within their borders.
The new policy development also ties into the $2.9 billion renewable energy drive aimed at electrifying 471 rural communities and creating more than 31,000 jobs, a project expected to significantly reduce energy poverty across Delta.
