Delta Govt Initiates Flood Plans After NiMet Warning
The Delta State government has launched an intensified flood preparedness campaign following a weather forecast warning of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued alerts for potential flooding in parts of the state. In response, the Delta State Government, through its Flood Disaster Management Committee (FDMC), is working with local councils to monitor flood-prone areas.
Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director-General of the State Orientation and Communications Bureau, told ADBN News that the committee chaired by Secretary to the State Government Dr Kingsley Emu is building on its successful operations from last year to better manage flood risks across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the committee to provide urgent support to affected communities. Measures include setting up emergency shelters and temporary learning centres for displaced students, particularly in riverine and vulnerable areas such as Patani, Burutu, Bomadi, and parts of Warri.
Residents have been advised to clear drainage systems, avoid tall trees during storms, switch off electrical appliances, and move important documents and belongings to higher ground.
