Delta Deputy Speaker Blasts Oil Firms for Snubbing Stakeholders’ Meeting
The Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Arthur Akpowowo, has criticised oil companies operating in the region for failing to attend a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at addressing long-standing issues between host communities and the industry.
Mr Akpowowo, who chaired the meeting held in Delta State on Thursday, said the absence of the oil firms undermined efforts to build dialogue and accountability. The event was organised by the non-governmental organisation Search for Common Ground.
He called on stakeholders to use the ongoing amendment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to push for stronger legal and environmental protections for affected communities.
Also speaking at the meeting, Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Vincent Oyibode, said effective leadership and enforcement of environmental standards were key to resolving disputes between oil firms and host communities. Organisers said the meeting was designed to promote trust and cooperation through direct engagement between stakeholders.
