Delta Assembly Advances Cybercrime Bill

The Delta State House of Assembly has moved forward with efforts to strengthen digital safety as lawmakers completed the first reading of the Delta State Cybercrime Prohibition and Prevention Bill, 2025. The bill seeks to create a legal framework for preventing, detecting, investigating, and prosecuting cyber-related offences across the state.

Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, presented the bill during plenary, with firm support from Hon. Edafe Emakpor of Uvwie Constituency, signalling unified legislative commitment to addressing the rise in cybercrime. Speaker Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor welcomed the initiative and fixed December 4, 2025, for the second reading.

If enacted, the legislation will strengthen the state’s capacity to combat identity theft, online fraud, data breaches, and other digital threats while empowering agencies with updated cybersecurity tools. Lawmakers say the move reflects growing urgency to protect residents, institutions, and businesses in a rapidly evolving technological space.
