Data Protection Sector Generates ₦16.2bn, Creates Jobs -NDPC
Nigeria’s data protection industry is fast becoming a key economic driver, generating over ₦16.2 billion and supporting thousands of jobs, according to the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr Vincent Olatunji.
Speaking at a media workshop in Lagos during National Privacy Week 2026, Olatunji said increased compliance, licensing and enforcement activities have boosted investor confidence and strengthened Nigeria’s digital economy.
He stressed that as digital technologies expand rapidly, safeguarding personal data has become central to trust and national development. He also challenged journalists to improve their understanding of privacy issues in order to inform the public responsibly.
Legal practitioner Alex Onwe added that the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 gives the commission strong enforcement powers, warning organisations that violations could attract stiff financial penalties and regulatory sanctions.
