Court Releases Delta Activist WongBox on Bail

A magistrate court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has granted bail to self-acclaimed activist, Victor Ojei, popularly known as WongBox. He was arraigned by the state police command on a three-count charge of threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence.

WongBox’s arrest and arraignment sparked reactions across civil society groups in the state. Activists led by Harrison Gwamnishu and Harrison Itulua reportedly mobilised to meet the bail conditions, ensuring his prompt release from custody on Monday.

The Delta State Police Command had earlier confirmed his detention, with its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, emphasising that the charges were in line with sections 355, 86 and 249 of the Criminal Code. Edafe maintained in a public statement that “nobody is above the law,” stressing that due process would be followed to its conclusion.

The case has generated mixed reactions, with some civil society leaders suggesting that the charges as politically motivated, while police authorities insist that the offences involved serious threats to public peace. WongBox is expected to return to court as trial continues
