Bus Crash Kills 10 Mourners Heading to Bayelsa Deputy Governor’s Burial

Tragedy struck Bayelsa State on Friday as mourners travelling to the burial of late former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, were involved in a fatal road accident that claimed more than 10 lives.

The victims were en route to Ofoni community in Sagbama Local Government Area for the burial ceremony when the 18-seater bus conveying them crashed along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle lost control while in motion, leading to a violent impact that left several passengers trapped inside the wreckage. Rescue efforts were immediately launched by residents and passersby.

Those who survived the crash were rushed to nearby hospitals with severe injuries, while security personnel and emergency responders moved in to secure the area and assess the situation.

The burial was part of a series of funeral activities organised in honour of Ewhrudjakpo, who died suddenly on December 11, 2025, after collapsing at the Government House in Yenagoa, a development that had already plunged the state into mourning.
