Atiku Clarifies Position, Denies 2027 Withdrawal Rumours

Amid widespread speculation, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports that he plans to bow out of the 2027 presidential race. His media office issued a statement debunking interpretations of his BBC Hausa interview, which had sparked headlines suggesting he would not contest.

The statement clarified that Atiku’s comments were meant to encourage inclusivity in the political space, especially for younger aspirants. He made it clear that the race should be open to all Nigerians, regardless of age, but made no indication that he was stepping aside himself.

According to his media aide, Paul Ibe, there was no point in the interview whether in the Hausa original or its English translation, where Atiku signaled a withdrawal or endorsed any specific individual. He simply reaffirmed the importance of internal democracy and healthy competition in the primary process.

Atiku’s team also criticized what it called deliberate media distortions aimed at manipulating public perception. The statement urged supporters to focus on the real message: a commitment to open political participation and leadership renewal through merit not exit.
