Tinted Glass Enforcement Return Sparks Legal Backlash From NBA
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the return of enforcement of tinted glass permit requirements, triggering swift opposition from the Nigerian Bar Association, which views the move as legally problematic. The enforcement is scheduled to resume on January 2, 2026.
Police authorities said the earlier suspension was a discretionary step to allow motorists time to complete documentation, noting a rise in criminal activities linked to vehicles with unauthorised tinted windows. The Force maintained that no court order prompted the initial suspension.
The NBA countered that the policy remains under judicial review and recalled multiple suits challenging its legality, including a Federal High Court case in Abuja. The association noted that an earlier undertaking given in court by police counsel led to a temporary halt in enforcement.
Raising the stakes, the NBA warned that any enforcement action before final court decisions could attract legal consequences. It called on the Inspector General of Police to withdraw the announcement and urged presidential intervention to prevent erosion of judicial authority.
