Nnamdi Kanu Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Terrorism

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on seven counts of terrorism. The judgment, delivered by Justice James Omotosho on Thursday, came more than four years after Kanu was seized in Kenya and returned to Nigeria for trial.

The court held that Kanu’s actions and directives, including broadcasts on Radio Biafra and the enforcement of sit-at-home orders, amounted to terrorism and infringed on citizens’ rights in the South-East. Justice Omotosho also ruled that Kanu bore responsibility for violent attacks linked to the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Prosecutors led by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, pushed for a death sentence, arguing that Kanu’s conduct had severe national security implications. His defence team pleaded for leniency, but the court maintained that a life term was appropriate given the weight of the offences.

The ruling adds to ongoing tensions surrounding IPOB activities and follows recent legal developments involving the group’s affiliates abroad.
