EFCC Arrests Delta Cleric Over Alleged Naira Abuse, Money Laundering
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Archbishop Angel Oyeghe, founder of Faith Healing Ministry in Warri, following a viral video that showed church members spraying naira notes on a live cow during a religious event. The Benin Zonal Directorate confirmed the arrest, noting that the clip sparked widespread online reactions and prompted swift enforcement action.
Investigators say the incident captured in the video violates Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which forbids the misuse and defacement of the national currency. The agency also revealed that several people seen taking part in the display are being identified and will be invited for questioning as part of the broader probe.
Archbishop Oyeghe is reported to have made initial statements to EFCC operatives and is cooperating with further inquiries. The Commission is examining possible links to money laundering and conspiracy, in addition to the alleged abuse of the naira.
Once ongoing investigations are concluded, the EFCC plans to file charges in court. The agency reiterated that it will continue to enforce financial laws without fear or favour, regardless of an individual’s religious or social standing.
