Warri South-West Push Bill to Introduce Ijaw, Itsekiri in Primary Schools
A new bill seeking to introduce compulsory teaching of Ijaw and Itsekiri languages in all primary schools across Warri South-West Local Government Area has been presented before the legislative chamber. The proposal was initiated by the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Rt. Hon. Ekpemupolo Idukedoumene Samuel, as part of efforts to preserve indigenous identity and promote cultural harmony.
In line with legislative procedure, Rt. Hon. Samuel temporarily stepped aside as Presiding Officer during the presentation, with Deputy Leader, Rt. Hon. Erewa Charles, taking charge of the session. Lawmakers hailed his action as a mark of respect for parliamentary norms.
The bill mandates that schools in predominantly Ijaw communities teach the Ijaw language, while those in Itsekiri communities adopt Itsekiri. Supporters say the initiative will help restore native fluency among young people and create opportunities for language educators and curriculum specialists.
Now slated for further deliberation, the legislation has drawn attention from cultural groups and residents who see it as a major step toward protecting heritage and strengthening unity in Warri South-West.
