Nigeria Demands Canada Withdraw ‘Erroneous’ Terror Tag on Parties
The Federal Government has faulted a ruling by a Canadian court that classified some political parties in Nigeria as terrorist organisations, calling the decision reckless and an unacceptable interference in the country’s democracy.
Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the case arose from a refugee application filed by a Nigerian, Douglas Egharevba, in 2017. He noted that branding entire political parties as terror groups without evidence undermines Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The government stressed that the ruling falsely portrays millions of law-abiding citizens as potential terrorists, despite the parties having produced democratically elected leaders.
Nigeria called on Ottawa to retract the decision, warning against actions that could fuel politically motivated narratives. It also urged the international community to disregard the judgment, reiterating that the country remains committed to the global fight against terrorism.
