Celebrations Begin in Warri as Olu of Warri Marks 4 Years on the Throne
Festivities begin today in Warri to mark the fourth anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the 21st Olu of Warri Kingdom.
The festivities is not only a celebration of royal tradition, but a new era of visionary leadership rooted in deep cultural heritage, unity, and service to the Iwere Nation.
The anniversary opens with a grand praise and worship service, reflecting His Majesty’s strong spiritual grounding and belief in divine guidance, values that have defined his reign since his coronation on August 21, 2021.
Over the next seven days, Warri will showcase the rich traditions of the Itsekiri people, an ancient kingdom with over 500 years of royal history. The event will feature a mix of cultural, sporting, and religious activities celebrating the monarch’s leadership and the heritage of the Iwere Nation.
Among the planned activities is a football match featuring Nigerian football legends such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu. A traditional boat regatta will also take place during the week, showcasing the vibrant maritime culture of the Itsekiri people.
On 21 August, the official anniversary day, events will focus on commemorating four years since Ogiame Atuwatse III’s ascension to the throne, a period marked by peace and progress within the Niger Delta region.
The celebrations will culminate on Saturday with the conferment of the prestigious Royal Order of Iwẹrẹ on seven distinguished sons and daughters of Warri. The awardees include prominent figures such as Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Mrs Helen Boyo-Ekwueme, Mrs Tara Fela-Durotoye, Dr Ebi Omatsola, Hon. (Dr) Godwin Ebosa, Mrs Eva Omagbemi, and Mr Oti Ikomi each recognised for their outstanding contributions to faith, business, healthcare, and innovation.
The week will close with a thanksgiving service, bringing the community together in gratitude and hope for the future.
