NAFDAC Defends GMOs Amid Growing Public Concern
Amid rising public scrutiny over genetically modified foods (GMOs), NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has clarified that GMOs are not harmful to human health if they meet safety standards. Speaking on national television, she emphasized that GMOs approved in Nigeria undergo rigorous checks before hitting the market.
Adeyeye explained that NAFDAC collaborates closely with the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) to ensure only safe, high-quality GMO products are approved. Without NBMA’s clearance, NAFDAC will not approve any GMO food, she said.
Labeling and transparency, she noted, are vital for consumer safety, urging Nigerians to always check packaging. Her remarks come amid heated national debate over GMO regulation, with calls for better oversight and public education.
