Tinubu Sacks Finance Minister Edun, Appoints Oyedele

Taiwo Oyedele & Wale Edun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, along with Umar Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. The decision was announced in a memo by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

Edun has been instructed to hand over to Taiwo Oyedele, formerly the Minister of State for Finance, who will now assume the role of Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Meanwhile, Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been named as the ministerial nominee and designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, with Dangiwa directed to transfer responsibilities to the Minister of State in that ministry.

The memo further stated that all handover and takeover processes must be completed by the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026. President Tinubu’s decision, according to Akume, is intended to strengthen cohesion and synergy in governance and to achieve a more impactful delivery of economic benefits to Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume noted that the President fully exercised his constitutional powers as conferred by Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) in approving the cabinet reshuffle.
