BORNO BOMB BLAST

Police authorities in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, have confirmed that 23 persons lost their lives while 108 others sustained injuries in three separate bomb blasts that occurred on Monday night. The incidents, which involved suspected suicide bombers, triggered immediate response from security operatives who moved to restore normalcy in the affected areas.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Kenneth-Daso, provided details of the attacks, stating that the explosions occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on March 16, 2026. The blast sites included the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover area.

Kenneth-Daso explained that preliminary investigations indicated the explosions were carried out by suspected suicide bombers. He expressed regret over the casualty figures, noting that 23 persons were confirmed dead while 108 others sustained injuries of varying degrees and are currently receiving medical attention.

Following the attacks, a joint team of police tactical units, military personnel, and other security agencies was swiftly deployed to the affected locations. The scenes were cordoned off and swept by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Base 13, Maiduguri, to ensure no further threats remained. The police spokesperson assured residents that normalcy had since returned to the state capital.
