Wives Appeal Over Husbands’ Detention After Clash With Soldier’s Brother

Two families in Imo State are calling for the release of their husbands who have been in military custody for more than a month following a dispute in their community.

Chimamkpa Nnorom and his brother-in-law Mmadueke Okereke were detained on 2 September by soldiers of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze. The arrest followed a fight between Mr Nnorom and Okezuo Ogbos, the brother of a serving soldier. Community members say Mr Okereke was not present during the altercation but was later picked up when he accompanied his relative to a peace meeting.

Relatives allege the men have been denied food, medical care and access to family members. Mrs Uzochi Nnorom said she lost her pregnancy after being assaulted by soldiers during a visit, while Mrs Richeal Okereke says her husband has collapsed several times in detention.

The families have appealed to state and federal authorities to intervene, arguing that the case is a civil matter and should be handled in court rather than by the military.
