Warri, New Kaduna, Ibadan, Ijebu, Ogoja and 27 Other States proposed by House of Reps

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 additional states, which, if approved, would bring the total number of states in the country to 67. This would include the current 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The proposal was presented during Thursday, February 6, plenary session by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chaired the session in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The details were outlined in a letter read to the House, which stated the specific requirements for initiating the process of state creation.

Warri Sentinel understands the creation of new states would require the support of at least one-third of National Assembly members. It also mandates that the House of Representatives, the respective State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Councils must all approve the process.

The proposal further states that local government areas advocating for additional units must adhere to Section 8 of Nigeria’s Constitution, which governs the creation of new states.

Among the proposed new states are Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa from Benue; Amana from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi; Savannah from Borno; Muri from Taraba; and FCT State. Other suggested states include New Kaduna, Gujarat from Kaduna, Tiga and Ari from Kano, and Kainji from Kebbi. There are also proposals for Etiti and Orashi from the South East, Adada from Enugu, and Orlu and Aba from the South East.

Additionally, new states could include Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, Ogun, Ijebu from Ogun, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun States.
