Warri–Itakpe Train Derails Near Agbor, NRC Links Incident to Suspected Vandalism

Rail operations along the Warri–Itakpe corridor were stopped on Sunday evening after a train derailed near Agbor, prompting an emergency evacuation. All passengers were moved from the affected coaches without injuries, according to officials.

NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, said early assessments suggest the derailment may have been triggered by vandalism on a section of the track. Security teams and technical crews were deployed overnight to stabilise the scene and commence recovery work.

The corporation has temporarily suspended train movements on the route to allow a comprehensive safety audit. Officials noted that services will only resume once experts certify the line safe for use.

Opeifa extended apologies to commuters for the disruption, underscoring the NRC’s commitment to maintaining safe operations.
