Warri City Stadium Pitch Under Scrutiny as Expert Faults ‘Cosmetic’ Projects
The newly installed pitch at the Warri City Stadium has come under scrutiny following fresh criticism of stadium construction and renovation projects executed by state governments.
Sports turf specialist, Ebi Egbe, warned that many facilities unveiled with lush green surfaces often fail to meet performance standards over time.
“Every pitch may look green from the stands, but not every green surface meets the standard required for elite football,” he said, stressing that only players and match officials—not administrators—can truly judge quality.
He cited examples such as the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Lekan Salami Stadium, and Stephen Keshi Stadium, which initially appeared impressive, but later struggled with poor drainage, rapid wear, and inconsistent grass coverage.
Egbe argued that the focus has been misplaced, stating “A pitch is not judged on commissioning day; it is judged months and years later under match pressure. If it cannot maintain quality consistently, then the ‘green’ was only cosmetic.”
The concerns come just days after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori inspected the Warri facility and commended the pitch.
Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau also backed the assessment, stating that the surface meets modern standards.
