Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100k, National Honours
Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been awarded national honours, cash gifts of $100,000 each, and new apartments following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the team was received by Vice-President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila were also present at the event, which celebrated the team’s achievement in winning their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.
D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final on Sunday, held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Their victory cements Nigeria’s status as a dominant force in African women’s basketball and comes just a week after a similar reception was held for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, who won their tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
The basketball team was led to the event by head coach Rena Wakama, who has been commended for her leadership throughout the tournament.
