TikTok User Remanded for Spreading Fake News on Tinubu’s Health

A Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of 29-year-old social media influencer, Ghali Isma’il, at the Keffi Correctional Centre for allegedly spreading false information about President Bola Tinubu’s health.

Isma’il was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) after posting videos on his verified TikTok handle, @bola\_asiwaju, falsely claiming that the President was critically ill due to poisoning.

According to the two-count charge presented by the DSS, Isma’il is accused of “publication of false news with intent to offend public peace” and “inciting disaffection to the government.” The charges are punishable under Sections 418 and 416 of the Penal Code Act.

The prosecution stated that the accused falsely claimed he had confirmation from official sources, an action believed to be aimed at causing public alarm and sowing distrust in government.

Presiding Magistrate Ekpeyong Iyang denied the defendant’s bail request and adjourned the case until August 19.
