Student Union Condemns Ozoro Festival Rape Culture

The Student Union Government of Southern Delta University has condemned alleged incidents of sexual harassment and assault involving female students during a festival in Oramudhu Community, Ozoro.

SUG President, in a statement issued following the reports, said the acts linked to a cultural practice known as “Aluedho” amount to criminal conduct and cannot be justified as tradition. He maintained that any custom that enables harassment, rape or violence against women has no place in society.

The reaction comes after reports and circulating videos purportedly showing female students being chased, stripped and assaulted during the event. According to the student leadership, the incidents indicate a pattern of organised abuse rather than isolated occurrences.

The union also expressed worry over the safety of students, noting that learning environments must remain safe and free from intimidation. It urged authorities and community leaders to act swiftly to safeguard students and ensure those responsible face the law.
