Rivers Police Arrest Two for Vandalizing NDDC Solar Lights
Two suspects have been arrested by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command for vandalizing and attempting to steal street solar lights belonging to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Port Harcourt. The arrests were made possible following a credible tip-off received by the police on January 26, 2025, at approximately 3:00 a.m.
In a statement issued by the Police Spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspects were apprehended along Danjuma Drive, off Trans-Amadi Road, while in the act of the crime. The two suspects, identified as Shaibu Yusuf, 30, from Bolari Town in Gombe State, and Ibrahim Abubakar, 28, from Katsina State, both reside at the Okuru scrap dump in the Abuloma community of Port Harcourt.
Upon searching the suspects, the police recovered several items linked to the crime, including solar light poles, solar light panels, panel bolts, panel nuts, and a knife. The suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a larger syndicate responsible for the theft of street solar lights and manhole covers in the area.
“The suspects will be charged to court, and we are continuing our efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate,” said Iringe-Koko.
The Rivers State Police Command has commended the public for their cooperation in reporting criminal activities and reiterated its commitment to combating vandalism and theft in the region.
