Rivers Assembly Adjourns Sittings Indefinitely Despite Governor’s Budget Notice

The Rivers State House of Assembly has adjourned its sittings indefinitely, following a plenary session on Friday, chaired by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.

The move came just hours after Governor Siminalayi Fubara wrote to the Speaker, informing him of his intention to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for consideration. In the letter, dated 13 March 2025, Governor Fubara stated he would present the budget on Wednesday, 19 March, or on any other date in March deemed suitable by the House.

The governor’s decision aligns with a recent Supreme Court ruling and follows a request from the lawmakers to have the budget re-presented.

Fubara also recalled a recent incident when he was denied access to the Assembly’s temporary quarters, where he had intended to present the budget, amid ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative branches.
