Tension rose in Ugbomro on Thursday as residents, mainly women, staged a protest demanding the release of individuals arrested during a police operation targeting suspected drug dealers the previous night.

Eyewitnesses said the protest followed a late-night raid in the community, during which several people were taken into custody. According to accounts from residents, security operatives arrived in large numbers and reportedly used tear gas to disperse crowds during the operation.

The demonstration saw women gathering in protest, calling for the release of those detained, insisting that some of those arrested were innocent members of the community.

In a related development, the community leader who was among those arrested during the raid has since been released, a move that appeared to ease some tension in the area.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the police authorities detailing the outcome of the raid or the status of other individuals taken into custody.
