Police, Air Force Personnel Clash in Jeddo, Delta State

A confrontation between personnel from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at a checkpoint in Jeddo, Delta State, following the transportation of a drug suspect has raised concerns among Nigerians.

The clash occurred when police officers, en route to a detention facility, were transporting a suspect found in possession of substances believed to be codeine, Indian hemp, and Canadian loud. According to police spokesperson SP Edafe Bright, the Air Force personnel, who were reportedly acquainted with the suspect, intervened at the checkpoint, demanding his release.

The situation escalated when the police refused to comply with the demand, resulting in an unprovoked attack by the Air Force officers, as described by Edafe in a statement on social media platform X on Thursday.

“The policemen attached to QRS were on their way with a suspect found in possession of substances suspected to be codeine, Indian hemp, and Canadian loud,” Edafe said. “But Air Force personnel, who happened to know the suspect, intercepted them and insisted that the policemen release him before proceeding. When the officers refused, the Air Force personnel attacked them unprovoked.”

The Delta State Police Command has assured the public that the matter is being handled. SP Edafe added that the incident was being investigated in collaboration with Air Force authorities, with both parties working to ensure such a situation does not arise again.

“This issue is being handled. We recognize the cordial relationship we have with the Nigerian Air Force in Delta State.”

He also revealed that the Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, and the Air Force authorities are looking into the incident and putting measures in place to avoid a recurrence.

At the time of publication, no official word has been given on whether disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in the clash.
