Peter Obi Faults Focus on 2027 Politics Amid Rising Insecurity
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, accusing political leaders of prioritising preparations for the 2027 general elections over the safety and welfare of citizens.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi lamented the continued captivity of school children abducted in Borno and Oyo states, noting that two weeks after their kidnapping, the victims had yet to regain their freedom.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted recent violent attacks across the country. He cited the killing of at least seven persons and the injury of 10 others in Gwon-Ajang Village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, following a terrorist attack on Sunday.
Recalling the abduction of students and teachers from three schools in Ahoro-Esinle Community, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Obi noted that 46 people, including 39 students, seven teachers and a school principal, were taken by gunmen on May 15.
He added that between 48 and 51 pupils and students were also abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Mussa Community, Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on the same day.
According to Obi, the continued targeting of school children and communities across the country reflects a deepening security crisis that requires urgent attention from government at all levels.
He urged political leaders to place the protection of lives and property above political calculations, stressing that the nation’s security challenges should take precedence over election-related activities.
“In a nation that is not at war, the ongoing insecurity that endangers schoolchildren signifies a profound and serious challenge,” Obi stated.
