Ozoro festival: Ibori dismisses “rape” claims

Onanefe Ibori

Former Governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori has dismissed reports linking Urhobo and Isoko cultural festivals to sexual violence, describing the alleged “rape festival” narrative as false and damaging.

In a statement addressing the Ozoro incident, Ibori said he was shocked upon hearing the claims and immediately sought verification from traditional authorities.

He stressed that festivals among the Urhobo and Isoko people are rooted in history, spirituality, and moral values, not violence.

Ibori also refuted claims that the Ekene festival involves abuse of women, calling such assertions “totally untrue.”

While condemning any act of violence, particularly against vulnerable persons, the former governor warned against generalizing the actions of individuals to entire ethnic groups.

He welcomed the intervention of security agencies and expressed hope that investigations would clarify the situation and dispel misinformation.
