Okpẹ Is Not Urhobo or Itsekiri, Okpe Union Warns

The Okpe Union has taken a firm stance against what it called provocative actions by some individuals from the Itsekiri and Urhobo ethnic groups, accusing them of making unfounded claims over Okpẹ territories. The Union insisted that Okpẹ is a distinct nation and not an extension or subgroup of any other ethnic nationality.

In a New Year message to the public, the Union reiterated its historical mandate to promote the independence and identity of the Okpẹ Nation. It announced plans to deepen the use of the Okpẹ language in religious worship, including church sermons, as part of broader efforts to strengthen cultural identity and drive development. The Union also pledged to sustain strategic partnerships with Okpẹ organizations and other ethnic groups across Delta State and Nigeria.

The Union further urged prominent Nigerians and opinion leaders to ensure accuracy when engaging with issues relating to Okpẹ history, language and culture. While reaffirming respect for the Okpẹ Throne, it maintained that democratic principles and good governance must remain central to leadership in Okpẹ Nation, stressing that no institution should override fundamental democratic norms.

Speaking through its President General Worldwide, Professor Igho Natufe, the Union emphasized the strategic importance of securing recognition of Okpẹ as a distinct ethnic nationality in Delta State. He called on stakeholders, including Sapele and Okpẹ local government councils, to play active roles in advancing unity, cooperation and economic development within the Okpẹ Nation.
