Oborevwori Fires Back at Omo-Agege, Slams Tinubu’s Economic Policies
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has criticized the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, accusing the president of transforming Nigeria into the “poverty capital of the world.”
In a statement issued by his Executive Assistant on New Media, Mr. Felix Ofou, on Thursday, Oborevwori accused the Tinubu-led administration of exacerbating hunger, poverty, and unemployment across the nation.
The governor’s comments were a direct response to a speech by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the former Deputy Senate President, who lauded the economic reforms introduced by President Tinubu. Omo-Agege, speaking at an APC event, stated the supposed positive impacts of these policies, including increased federal allocations to states, economic growth, rising exports, and improved farmer incomes. He also pointed to the over N900 billion allocated to Delta State over the past 18 months, suggesting that there was little development or meaningful projects to show for it.
Governor Oborevwori, however, rejected these claims. In his statement, the governor questioned the effectiveness of the increased federal allocation in the face of worsening economic conditions, including galloping inflation, a devalued naira, and widespread poverty.
“Can we really talk of increased money in any state in Nigeria? What is the worth of such money in the face of galloping inflation, gross devaluation of the naira, unparalleled hunger, mass poverty, mass unemployment, and the daily closure of major factories?” Oborevwori said.
The governor also referenced reports from international bodies like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which have criticized Tinubu’s economic policies, claiming they have failed to deliver sustainable growth. According to Oborevwori, these policies have only deepened the country’s economic crisis, pushing millions further into poverty and unemployment.
