Oborevwori Finally Speaks on Warri INEC Delineation Dispute

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged residents of Warri Federal Constituency to remain calm and law-abiding amid tensions over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) proposed ward delineation.

Addressing the Delta State House of Assembly during a state of the state address at the Assembly Complex in Asaba on Wednesday, Governor Oborevwori stated that, having grown up in Warri, he is fully aware of the sensitivity surrounding the issue and is taking time to carefully assess the situation before responding.

The Governor stated that the issue of the ward delineation is already being handled by the federal government and questioned what further role he could play as governor.

Governor Oborevwori condemned provocative statements by some individuals that could threaten peace and security in the state.  He reiterated that he serves as governor for all residents of Delta State and appealed to all to exercise restraint in their utterances and to avoid actions that could undermine unity.

The Delta State governor reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining unity and peace in the State, pledging to govern in the interest of all residents, irrespective of ethnic affiliation.

The controversy centres on INEC’s plan to redraw electoral wards in Warri Federal Constituency, a move intended to reflect population changes and improve electoral administration.

However, the proposal has sparked unrest among the Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Urhobo ethnic groups, who fear that the ward delineation may lead to marginalisation and a loss of political representation. The ethnic groups have accused each other of trying to influence the ward boundary adjustments for political advantage.

Recently, tensions further escalated leading to the burning of the Ajelebe settlement within the Omadino community in Warri South Local Government Area, by suspected youths from neighbouring Gbaramatu community.
