Nurses Suspend Nationwide Strike After Talks with FG

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its seven-day nationwide warning strike, directing members to resume work immediately. The decision followed a virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) after negotiations with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Labour, and other key government agencies.

The strike, which began on Wednesday, was aimed at pushing for improved welfare packages, including an upward review of shift and uniform allowances, a separate salary structure for nurses, an increase in core duty allowance, mass recruitment, and the creation of a nursing department within the health ministry.

Following the talks, NEC acknowledged the steps taken by the Federal Government, including clear timelines for meeting the association’s nine core demands. A Memorandum of Understanding outlining the implementation framework was signed, prompting the suspension of the industrial action.

The association assured members that it would continue monitoring the government’s compliance with the agreed timelines. It also warned against any form of victimisation of nurses who participated in the strike, reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights, welfare, and professional dignity of nurses and midwives across the country.
