NNPCL Warns of More Smear Campaigns Amid Senate Ultimatum
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) says it is facing active attempts to sabotage its reform agenda, just months after a change in leadership. According to a statement issued by the company on Friday, a group of individuals some from within the organization and others from outside are reportedly working to undermine efforts to clean up the institution.
The current head of NNPC Ltd., Bayo Ojulari, who replaced Mele Kyari on April 2 following a leadership shakeup ordered by President Bola Tinubu, is spearheading a campaign aimed at increasing transparency and accountability within the organization.
However, NNPC claims that certain parties opposed to these changes are engaged in a coordinated effort to derail the reforms. The company accuses them of deliberately spreading false information and engineering smear campaigns to damage the credibility of the new leadership and mislead the public.
The company also warned that more disinformation may surface in the coming weeks, but reassured stakeholders that the reform process will continue as planned. NNPC called on its employees, industry partners, and the Nigerian public to remain focused and not be distracted by what it termed as efforts to sow doubt and confusion.
Despite the disruption, Ojulari’s team says it remains committed to transforming NNPC Ltd. into a more efficient and corruption-resistant institution that aligns with the broader goals set by the federal government.
This follows a 10-day ultimatum from the Senate to Ojulari over his failure to appear for a summons concerning alleged financial irregularities totaling more than ₦210 trillion.
