Nigeria at 64: President Tinubu Calls for Patience Amid Economic Reforms
President Bola Tinubu has again asked citizens to be patient as his administration works on reforms to ease economic difficulties and address security issues.
In an Independence Day speech monitored by Warri Sentinel, the President acknowledged the rising cost of living and the unemployment crisis affecting millions across the country. However, he assured Nigerians that steps are being taken to restore stability and prosperity.
“We know the struggles many of you face,” the President said. “I promise you that your voices are heard, and we are dedicated to finding lasting solutions to improve the lives of our citizens.”
The President also reflected on the nation’s journey since its founding as well as its economic and security challenge. He said there have been important successes, especially in the fight against terrorism, mentioning that more than 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders have been removed in the past year, allowing many northern communities to return to peace.
“On the security front, our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry. Thousands of our people have come back home, and we are committed to finishing the job,” he said, adding that these improvements will help increase food production as farmers return to their lands.
President Tinubu also addressed the recent flooding in some areas of the country, stating that his administration is taking action to prevent future disasters. He said the government has set up a Disaster Relief Fund and ordered safety checks for all dams in the country to reduce future risks.
On economic reforms, the President mentioned that Nigeria attracted over $30 billion in foreign investments last year. He said his administration has worked to stabilize the foreign exchange market and reduce the national debt while aiming to create more jobs and lower living costs through agricultural programs and industry changes.
President Tinubu further asked Nigerians to stay patient as these reforms take shape, stating that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term difficulties, especially as his government promotes free enterprise and greater investment in agriculture, oil, and technology.
“Better days are ahead of us,” he assured. “We are Nigerians strong and determined. Together, we will build a brighter future.”
The President also announced a National Youth Conference to engage young Nigerians in discussing key issues like education, jobs, and security. He stressed the importance of including youth in shaping policies for a better future.
While President Tinubu’s speech covered many topics such as security, economic reforms, foreign investments, agriculture, and youth development, it did not include specific details about expected petrol pump prices or the Dangote Refinery.
