NCC To Sanction Starlink Over Data Tariff Violation
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed concerns about the unauthorized increase in data tariffs implemented by satellite internet service provider Starlink.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the NCC revealed that Starlink’s actions contravene the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003, specifically Sections 108 and 111, along with its licensing conditions.
Dr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at the NCC said the commission views this tariff hike as a significant breach of regulatory protocol. He noted that Starlink had unilaterally announced its price changes after submitting a request for price adjustments, which the NCC had not yet reviewed or approved.
“The commission was surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request for approval, for which we had not communicated a decision,” Muoka stated. He further warned that such actions pose a threat to the regulatory stability of the telecommunications sector.
The NCC has vowed to implement appropriate enforcement measures against any licensee that undermines regulatory stability.
The commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent telecommunications environment in Nigeria, ensuring that all providers comply with established regulations.
