Monoyo Edon Quits PDP Amid Rising Defections, Cites Stifling Party Culture
A former aspirant for the chairmanship position of Warri South Local Government Area, Monoyo Edon, has officially announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal culture. Edon, who did not indicate whether he would be joining another political party, made the announcement via a Facebook post on Sunday, February 9.
In a resignation letter addressed to Allen Mayuku, the ward chairman of Obodo/Ubeji 1, Edon expressed concerns about an “uncanny reward system” in the PDP, which he believes stifles new, progressive ideas.
His resignation raises fresh concerns about the PDP’s internal dynamics as it faces increasing defections from members.
Edon, who has been a member of the PDP since 2021, explained that his resignation came after growing disillusioned with the party’s internal culture. He expressed frustration with how the party rewarded loyalty, claiming it was not conducive to the inclusion of fresh, progressive perspectives, particularly in Warri South.
“During and after the contest, I became more familiar with the culture of the party, which quite frankly has an uncanny reward system and is unaccommodating to new progressive ideas, particularly in Warri South,” Edon stated in his resignation letter.
Edon stated that he joined the PDP in 2020 with the belief that it was a platform for young, promising Deltans. However, his recent experiences have led him to reassess his place within the party.
“It is not in my character to remain in a place averse to my progress, contribution, and aspiration.”
He also took the opportunity to appreciate those who had supported him during his time in the PDP, including Dcn Victor Agbateyiniro and Mr. Ewetan Okerentie, the former Ward Secretary.
