Manhunt For Alleged Rapist In Delta Community

As the people and residents of Okere community continue the celebration of their 537th Awankere festival, it is sorrow for the family of an 11 year-old rape victim.

A former youth chairman of the community, Oyibo Awani has been accused of raping the 11 years old girl on Thursday, August 1.

There are indications that the family of the victim has been receiving life threats if the news of the criminal act comes to the public, Warri Sentinel understands.

The victim, an orphan who lives with her grandmother in Awani quarters of the community was alleged to have stolen 10,000 naira and the current Youth Chairman Mr. Scott Awani had already handled the matter.

However, a community leader who spoke to this Warri Sentinel correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “Yes, the matter is true, Oyibo ordered that this minor be locked in a room he has access to. He returned to the room around 10 to 11:00pm and boasted of his connection to free the little girl if she agrees to sleep with him. An offer, she obliged under duress”.

Our source further disclosed that the girl had been beaten the following day for theft and was ordered to refund the money. She later confided in her grandmother that Mr. Awani had carnal knowledge of her.

Some members of the Okere Youth Executive intervened by taking the rape victim to the Nigerian’ Police A’ Division, Warri to take her statement on Saturday, August 3.

It is understood that the alleged rapist is still on the run and has refused to present himself before the Police station for questioning.

The victim’s family and members of Okere community who are in pains, are appealing to government to serve justice on the poor girl.
