Itsekiri Pressure Groups warn against disrespecting the Olu of Warri
A coalition of Itsekiri pressure groups has publicly condemned a recent statement by Comr. Emiko Oghomienor, describing his comments about the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, as both inciteful and disrespectful. Oghomienor reportedly questioned the monarch’s authority to intervene in the leadership of the Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC), prompting criticism from Itsekiri leaders and youth who view his statements as contrary to the kingdom’s traditions.
In a move to address ongoing leadership disputes, the Olu of Warri recently dissolved the INYC’s executive body and formed a committee to draft a new constitution, aiming for greater transparency in the council’s leadership. The coalition has welcomed the monarch’s intervention, viewing it as timely for restoring credibility to the organization.
The coalition also raised concerns about elderly individuals taking on roles designated for younger representatives, noting that youth in the Warri Kingdom are typically defined as those aged 18 to 40. They argue that Oghomienor’s age and influence give him an “unfair advantage” in a council intended to amplify the voices of the youth. Critics assert that his actions undermine the monarch’s efforts to establish a more transparent leadership structure that genuinely represents young people.
In their statement, the coalition urged unity and support for the monarchy, stating that “the proclamation of the Olu of Warri is binding on all well-meaning Itsekiris.” They warned that disrespecting the kingdom’s monarchy and traditions would not be tolerated.
The statement was signed by various representatives, including Comr. Gbubemi Awala of the Itsekiri Interest Group; Comr. Metsaghanrun Sam Oki of Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance; Comr. Lily-white O. Esigbone of the Itsekiri Historical Front; Comr. Eboma Tuoyo Michael of the Itsekiri Youth Elites; Comr. Toritseju Joseph of the Iwere Mentorship Forum; Comr. Oritsema Ejoh of the Itsekiri Liberation Group; Comr. Abugewa Youngreen of the Warri Political Interest Forum; and Comr. Okotie Omatseye Blessing of Codafa.
