INEC Begins Probe After Fire Razes Office in Delta
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is investigating a devastating fire that engulfed its office in Owa-Oyibu, Delta State, destroying essential election materials. The fire, which broke out on December 2, 2024, severely damaged the office’s storage section, where a variety of equipment vital for upcoming elections were kept.
According to a statement from Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, the blaze is believed to have been caused by a power surge after the restoration of electricity in the area. The fire destroyed hundreds of election-related items, including 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and three electric generators, among other crucial supplies.
Though the fire was significant, INEC confirmed that there were no injuries or fatalities. The Commission commended the Delta State Fire Service and the Nigeria Police Force for their rapid response to the incident.
The office in Ika North East Local Government Area serves a large constituency, covering 238 polling units and more than 131,000 registered voters. The loss of such a large quantity of election materials raises concerns about potential delays or complications in future elections.
INEC has pledged to replace the lost materials and assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire. The Commission’s statement also noted that all necessary steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence and to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in the region.
