Ikomi’s Proton Energy Partners with Lagos Govt, Targets Major Growth in Power Generation⁩

Proton Energy Ltd, a leading Nigerian Independent Power Plant (IPP) developer, is aligning its efforts with the federal government’s commitment to meeting the nation’s growing energy needs through sustainable solutions.

On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the company’s Founder and CEO, Mr. Oti Ikomi, met with key officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to discuss collaborative initiatives focused on advancing clean energy in the region.

The meeting, held at the Lagos State Secretariat, was attended by Honourable Biodun Ogunleye, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, and Engr. Mrs. Abiola Kosegbe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, among other top officials. The discussions were centered on how both Proton Energy and Lagos State can work together to enhance energy security, promote sustainability, and address the growing power needs of the state and the country at large.

Proton Energy’s focus on expanding Nigeria’s power generation capacity is seen as a critical step in supporting the country’s energy agenda.

The company is currently spearheading the development of three new gas-powered power plants across Nigeria, with a target of adding 1,500 MW of new power generation capacity over the next five years. This effort is in line with the federal government’s goal to increase reliable electricity supply and transition to cleaner energy sources.

Ikomi, a seasoned energy expert with over 30 years of experience in infrastructure development across more than 30 African countries, stressed the need for innovative approaches to tackling the continent’s energy challenges. He noted that Nigeria’s growing power demands require urgent action, particularly in the development of clean and reliable energy sources.

Ikomi’s extensive career includes senior executive roles at global financial institutions such as Citibank, Standard Bank of South Africa, and Ecobank Transnational Inc. He was also the founding CEO of Keystone Bank and has board leadership positions in retail and IT companies. He holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the State University of New York and is a distinguished member of both Tau Beta Pi and Omega Rho honor societies.

Stakeholders believe this strategic partnership could position Lagos State as a leader in clean energy innovation, while addressing the ongoing power challenges that impact millions of Nigerians.
