ICPC Seizes Alleged Call-Tapping Devices from El-Rufai Home
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced the recovery of electronic devices allegedly capable of intercepting telephone conversations and storing sensitive security materials from the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai. The commission said the items were seized during a search at his Asokoro home in the Federal Capital Territory.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that it obtained a 14-day remand order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari, FCT, authorising el-Rufai’s detention pending the conclusion of investigations. It maintained that the former governor’s custody is backed by law and not influenced by political considerations.
According to court documents filed before the FCT High Court, the ICPC is seeking the dismissal of a suit instituted by el-Rufai alleging violations of his fundamental human rights. The commission said its investigation covers claims of a missing €1.4 million, 180 disputed payments totalling over N2.15 billion from Kaduna State’s Consolidated Revenue Account, and transfers amounting to N428 million into unidentified accounts. It also stated that an aide linked to the matter has reportedly travelled out of the country.
In an affidavit sworn to by ICPC Litigation Officer David Efuk, the agency said the search was conducted in the presence of el-Rufai’s wife, Hadiza, and their son, Mohammed. It alleged that the former governor declined to cooperate with investigators and refused access to examine the seized devices.
The commission further referenced el-Rufai’s past public comments about monitoring the calls of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, noting concerns over alleged threats to potential witnesses. The ICPC stressed that all investigative steps, including the search and remand, were carried out in line with its statutory mandate, adding that formal charges would be filed before the expiration of the remand order on March 5, 2026.
