Group Urges UN to Probe Death of Okuama Leader in Military Detention
The Urhobo Media Practitioners and Advocacy Group (UMPAG) has called for an investigation into the death of Pa. James Oghoroko, the President-General of Okuama community in Ewu Kingdom, who died while in military detention in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Sunday, UMPAG expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding Pa. Oghoroko’s death, suggesting foul play and urging international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, to conduct a thorough probe.
Pa. Oghoroko, along with other Okuama community leaders, was arrested in August after 17 military personnel were killed in the creeks of Okuama, located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The group condemned the actions of the Nigerian military, which they claim led to the community leader’s death, and called for the release of other detained Okuama leaders, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpor, the President-General of Ewu Kingdom.
UMPAG’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over the treatment of the detained leaders, as they push for accountability and justice.
