Ghana Receives Nigerians Expelled from United States
Ghana has become one of the few African nations to accept third-country deportees from the United States under President Donald Trump’s expanded immigration agenda.
President John Mahama confirmed that 14 people, including Nigerians and a Gambian, have already landed in Accra. While buses were arranged to take the Nigerians back home, the Gambian deportee is still being supported.
Mahama defended the decision as consistent with ECOWAS protocols that allow free movement within West Africa. He acknowledged tensions with Washington over tariffs and visas but insisted that overall relations remain positive.
The policy has drawn criticism from rights advocates, who argue that sending migrants to countries they have no ties with threatens their safety. While Ghana has accepted the arrangement, Nigeria has publicly rejected US requests, citing economic and security reasons.
