Fuel Price Hike: Tinubu Unveils CNG Initiative at N230 per Litre

President Bola Tinubu has launched an affordable alternative to petrol aimed at reducing the cost of transportation for Nigerians. Warri Sentinel understands the initiative, known as the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), will make Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) available to vehicles at N230 per litre.

This offers a more affordable and eco-friendly alternative to petrol, which is currently priced above N900 per litre. The program is part of the government’s larger effort to diversify energy sources and address the effects of the recent removal of fuel subsidies.

As a key component of the initiative, President Tinubu approved the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles. These kits, which will include free installation, will be distributed over the next 18 months, allowing commercial drivers to convert their vehicles to CNG and lower their operational costs.

The conversion process will be overseen by NIPCO Gas in collaboration with PCNGi, using a network of authorized conversion centers throughout Nigeria. These centers will provide the necessary infrastructure for a smooth transition to CNG.

In the first phase of the program, 10,000 free conversion kits will be distributed this week. These kits will be allocated to transport operators through major national transport associations, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Moove, UBER, and the Kaduna State Transport Authority (KSTA).
