Free2Blue Initiative Promises 2.5 Million Jobs In Niger Delta

A sweeping $250 billion investment drive under the Free2Blue Niger Delta initiative has been unveiled, promising over 2.5 million sustainable jobs while restoring the region’s fragile ecosystems. The programme aligns with Nigeria’s broader ambition to grow its economy to $2 trillion by unlocking opportunities within the blue economy.

Key focus areas include coastal tourism, fisheries and aquaculture, marine logistics, blue economy industrial parks and wetland-based renewable energy. Global Director Victor Wilkinson Agih noted that structured partnerships and improved business conditions could reposition the Niger Delta as a hub of innovation and environmental sustainability.

Community participation forms the backbone of the initiative. Regional Coordinator Kabiru Idris Momodu stated that the project integrates indigenous knowledge with modern environmental practices, transforming mangrove restoration and shoreline protection into income-generating ventures, especially for women and youth.

Timed with World Wetlands Day, the programme sets 2035 targets that include large-scale mangrove restoration, eco-volunteer mobilisation, clean cookstove distribution and scholarship support.
