Flood Is Coming, Agency Warns Deltans

The Delta State Orientation Bureau has warned residents to brace for worsening flood as heavy rainfall is forecasted from September 24-28, compounded by the release of water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director General of the Bureau, while speaking on a radio program on September 25, advised residents in high-risk areas including Abraka, Agbor, Asaba, Umuakwata, Aboh, Ozoro, Oleh, Otu-Jeremi and coastline communities to temporarily relocate to higher ground with essential belongings.

He further disclosed the state government plans of establishing IDP camps in vulnerable areas like Ozoro and Asaba, ensuring provisions for healthcare, sanitation, and other necessities.

Other measures include The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support displaced individuals, including offering airlifting services from remote locations.

According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has mandated essential services for those affected, emphasizing the need for community support and urging businesses to enhance their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in aiding displaced persons.

“We urge those likely to be affected by the foreseeable flooding to immediately relocate to upper land, take with them valuable household items and all perishable items.

“It is time to be our brother’s keeper. Government alone cannot do everything. Companies should step up their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes by assisting the state government, care givers and partners to care for displaced persons”, he remarked.

Residents are advised to act swiftly, taking valuable items and perishable goods to higher ground.

Specific locations for IDP camps will be announced shortly.
