First Lady Calls for Justice After Death of Arise News Anchor

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has offered her condolences following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old journalist with Arise News. The broadcaster, known to viewers as Sommie, died in Abuja after reportedly falling from her apartment balcony while trying to escape an armed robbery.

In a statement, Mrs Tinubu said the country had lost one of its bright young professionals. She extended her sympathies to Maduagwu’s family, friends, and colleagues, and urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice. “It is painful to see a life full of promise end so suddenly,” she said.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with many calling attention to growing concerns over insecurity in the capital. Maduagwu had gained recognition for her work as a news anchor.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also responded to the news, calling it a tragic and senseless loss. In a post on social media, he sent condolences to the Maduagwu family and Arise News staff.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, paid tribute to the late journalist, calling her as a talented voice in the media and a trained lawyer. He said her death was not just a personal loss but a blow to Nigerian journalism.

Mr Obi also used the moment to call for urgent reforms to improve public safety. “No one should lose their life in such a senseless manner,” he said, urging the government to take stronger steps to protect lives.

Maduagwu’s death has left her colleagues and viewers in shock.
